Who Shows First at Showdown in Poker?

At the showdown, the order in which players reveal their cards follows a simple standard. House rules can differ slightly, so check with the dealer in a live room, but this is how almost every game runs.

If there was a bet on the river

The last player to bet or raise on the river shows first. They made the final aggressive action, so they’re the one being “called”. Everyone else then shows (or mucks) in clockwise order.

Example: Ana bets the river, Ben raises, Ana calls. Ben made the last aggressive action, so Ben shows first.

If the river was checked through

The first player to the left of the button shows first, then play continues clockwise. That’s the same player who would have acted first on the river.

If a player is all-in

When a player is all-in and no more betting is possible, all hands are turned face up before the remaining cards are dealt. Tournaments almost always follow this rule, and it protects against collusion.

Can I muck instead of showing?

Yes. When it’s your turn to show and you can see you’re beaten, you can muck — throw your cards away face down — and give up any claim to the pot. You don’t have to show a losing hand.

Two things to know:

• Cards speak. If you table your hand, the best hand wins, even if you announce it wrongly. Always turn your cards face up rather than declaring them.
• Don’t muck a winner. Once your cards touch the muck they’re usually dead. If you’re not sure, table them and let the dealer read the hand.

Online poker

Online sites handle showdown order automatically and usually give you a “muck losing hands” option. The rules above explain what you see.
